Then again, if you are like me and obsessed with words and the art that comes from darkness and the study of lonliness, then this is a work of genius. If you almost lost your self in desire, don't read this book. If you are jaded by love don't read this book. Sartre writes beautifully and describes the physical world in such incredible detail, that if you are a reader, and even more if you are a writer, you want to keep going and never put it down, but if you are not emotionally stable enough to handle the fact that you might have done nothing but existing, don't read this book. It is sickening and dark and so terribly everyday that it gets inside you if you let it. ![]() Nausea is not a good thing to have as the only thing that belongs to you, and even worse as the only thing that you belong to. I put a longer review of this book / a journal entry that I wrote while I was reading it in "my writing" since it was too long for this page. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments The bluest eye book buy![]() “We kept saying, ‘What did this book ever do to people?’” said Rooks, who is chair of the department. The idea for the reading came to Noliwe Rooks and Matthew Guterl, both professors in Brown’s Department of Africana Studies, in the wee hours one February morning. ![]() ![]() “Here was an ugly little girl asking for beauty… A little black girl who wanted to rise up out of the pit of her blackness and see the world with blue eyes,” reads one of the book’s most well-known passages. “The Bluest Eye” has been banned by multiple school districts across the country, as book bans and censorship have escalated in the 2022-23 school year. Inside the bright agora of Stephen Robert Hall, Brown faculty members, students, alumni and administrators read passages from the book, which follows a Black girl in Ohio who longs to have lighter skin and blue eyes because she equates whiteness with beauty. Scholars and leaders from Brown University took turns reading Toni Morrison’s novel “The Bluest Eye” to an audience of campus and local community members on Tuesday, May 2, as a show of support for teachers resisting book bans in classrooms and libraries across a growing number of U.S. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Fallen angels walter![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We get almost half way through the book before “fallen angels” are referred to. His adventures through the selection and training processes are chronicled with quite readable dialogue. He believes that the military just might be a way out of town. Meyers begins as Perry finishes high school and realizes that there is no money in the family for college and that the mean streets hold no future. Yet it is a story free of the angst, bitterness, hatred, and racism so often found in other novels dealing with the same theme It’s a story told by a young black man in a predominately black unit in a decidedly racially mixed war. Though there are a few mechanical and continuity errors-including weapon caliber and nomenclature-Myers gives us a compact, easy-to-read book. But we easily understand the stories of main character Richie Perry and his comrades who serve in an unidentified unit in Vietnam. In the book, names have been changed to protect the innocent. While written in the first-person and appearing at first glance to be autobiographical, the story is actually a tribute to Myers’ brother, Thomas Wayne “Sonny” Myers, who died in Vietnam in 1968 and to whom the book is dedicated. ![]() The late Walter Dean Myers’ acclaimed 1988 Young Adult Vietnam War novel, Fallen Angels (Scholastic, 336 pp., $9.99, paper), is today being featured as assigned reading in high school English, history, and social studies classes across the nation. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Angel fire by la weatherly![]() ![]() In the first book in an electrifying trilogy, L. The reason he was interested in meeting us – and vice-versa was that he had done a lot of experiments with mescaline and we were probably the first of the American poets that had any literary background, who approached him to discuss it sort of sanely, without excessive enthusiasm, but just trying to check out what was going on. ![]() And he came in one day and knocked as I had my foot in the sink, washing my feet, which he thought was very funny behavior on the part of American poets, probably typical (American) behavior We gave him a copy of Corso’s Gasoline, and he looked at it and then kept repeating, like a mantra, “mad children of soda-caps, mad children of soda-caps”. We wanted to meet him and we lived around the block. I’d left a note saying we were American poets. He lived on Rue Segur near the Seine, on the Left Bank. He lived around the block in Paris from Rue Git de Coeur , where we lived. ![]() ![]() And, let’s see, it was 1965 probably, and we’d known Michaux since (19)58). Like another reviewer has said, it is definitly a very cool scene. I also love how Golon brings to life historical figures. Intrigue, suspense, romance, action, wonderful historical detail, great and memorable characters, the works. Its really brought to life a time period I knew very little about, 1600s France. The Marquise of Angels is my favorite book of the series so far. The Angelique books are excellent historical fiction and both Golons(Anne and Serge) were born storytellers. The copy I read was actually an old library copy of it, and it was titled Angelique and combined this book and Road to Versailles as one. I've just discovered the Angelique series(reading Angelique in Barbery just this minute) and I cannot believe such a brilliant series is out of print in the USA! Angelique:The Marquise of Angels is the first book of this series, and is about the childhood and first marriage of one of literatures greatest heroines, Angelique. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments The swerve lucretius![]() It was a beautiful poem of the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functions without the aid of gods, that religious fear is damaging to human life, that pleasure and virtue are not opposites but intertwined, and that matter is made up of very small material particles in eternal motion, randomly colliding and swerving in new directions. His discovery, Lucretius’ ancient poem On the Nature of Things, had been almost entirely lost to history for more than a thousand years. ![]() He was Poggio Bracciolini, the greatest book hunter of the Renaissance. In the winter of 1417, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late thirties plucked a very old manuscript off a dusty shelf in a remote monastery, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. Renowned scholar Stephen Greenblatt brings the past to vivid life in what is at once a supreme work of scholarship, a literary page-turner, and a thrilling testament to the power of the written word. ![]() Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments Transcendent kingdom goodreads![]() ![]() This happens time and time again as the family experiences blatant racism, abandonment by the patriarch of the family, and the pitfalls of addiction. As an example, Gifty describes finding her mother suicidal and overcome with grief, but describes the scene so factually that I was not able to feel that despair along with her. What was missing for me was an emotional depth that never came to be. The style is that of a memoir – we spend most of our time in Gifty’s head, reading about her as she walks through these experiences. Gifty is a gifted neuroscience student, studying addiction in mice as a way to heal and better understand her brother’s inability to recover. The story centres around Gifty who is caring for her deeply depressed Ghanaian mother in the aftermath of her brother’s death by overdose. Gyasi has crafted a story aimed at addressing some pretty heavy subject matter: depression, grief, addiction, and the immigrant experience (from multiple generations). ![]() I also value respectful criticism when required, which I’ll try to provide here. It’s hard for me to rate books below 3 stars as I have a deep respect for those who share their vulnerability and put their work out into the world. I believe there’s a reader for every book, but in this case this just wasn’t for me. I’ll preface by saying that I know is an unpopular opinion, and that Yaa Gyasi is very loved and respected. ![]() |
